Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) The Nile crocodile
is found in Africa and on some islands, including Madagascar. Crocodiles
can be distinguished from alligators by their long narrow snout and their
mandibular tooth, which protrudes from their lower jaw rather than fitting
in to their upper jaw. Diet includes fish, turtles, baboons, hyenas,
impalas, and wildebeest. The average size of the Nile Crocodile is 16 feet
with the maximum size reaching 20 feet and up to 2000 pounds. The Nile
Crocodile can live up to 80 years in captivity. |

"Snappy" American Alligator
(Alligator mississippiensis) The American alligator is found from
the southern Virginia-North Carolina border to the Rio Grande in Texas.
The average adult size for a female is 8.2 feet, and the average size for
a male is 11.2 feet. Snappy measures 6.2 feet. Males can reach a weight of nearly half a ton. Diet
consists of fish, turtles, snakes, and small mammals. Alligators are
usually found in freshwater, slow-moving rivers. They are also found in
swamps, marshes, and lakes. They can only tolerate salt water for brief
periods because they do not have salt glands.
